Traffic Safety During Power Outages

During power outages, it is very typical that traffic signals will become inoperable. When a driver approaches an intersection with traffic light blackout, State law requires the driver to treat the intersection the same as a four-way stop.

Suisun City Police Chief Aaron Roth reminds all drivers that “if all traffic signal lights are not working because of an electrical power failure, you must stop at the intersection and then proceed when you know other turning and approaching vehicles, bicycles, or pedestrians have stopped. A blacked-out traffic signal works the same as a four-way stop intersection.”

Please plan ahead for possible power outages, and take extra care while driving to reach your destination safely, taking extra care to watch for pedestrians and bicyclists.
