Suisun City Fire Granted Advanced Life Support Accreditation

The Solano County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department granted the Suisun City Fire Department the accreditation necessary to deliver Advanced Life Support (ALS) services in Suisun City. Prior to today, Suisun City was the only municipality in Solano County not providing ALS care for its residents.

The Fire Department is staffed with at least one licensed paramedic fire personnel on-duty every day to ensure it can provide 24/7 ALS response services. The Fire Department carries state-of-the-art medical equipment on its apparatus, including Zoll Cardiac Monitors, digital laryngoscopes, electric IO drills, and many other tools, to ensure that responding paramedics can deliver excellent medical care to every patient.

“This is a historic day for the Suisun City Fire Department,” said Fire Chief Justin Vincent. “Suisun City Fire Department has a 159-year history of providing excellent customer service to the citizens and visitors of Suisun City.

“As the Fire Chief and a resident of Suisun City, I am dedicated to ensuring that our highly skilled fire department has the training, tools, and personnel to ensure that we strive to meet the needs and expectations of our community,” Chief Vincent said.

“I am pleased to announce that we have accomplished our strategic goal of elevating the level of healthcare we provide our community to Advanced Life Support, Paramedic,” Chief Vincent said. “With this designation for Suisun City Fire Department, every city in Solano County now has paramedic-level service provided by their respective municipal fire agency. Additionally, the residents of Suisun City will have better outcomes to their medical emergencies with our paramedic-level staff working side-by-side with Medic Ambulance to provide the highest quality care possible for our community.”

What is Advanced Life Support (ALS)

Advanced Life Support (ALS) is a set of enhanced life-saving protocols, enhanced scope of practice and elevated medical skillsets that extend beyond the Basic Life Support (BLS) previously provided by the Fire Department.

The ALS paramedic staff are able to provide urgent, advanced medical interventions and treatments during medical emergencies, such as cardiac arrests, strokes, overdoses, traumatic injuries, and other life-threatening conditions. Fire Department paramedics will be able to intubate, push lifesaving medications, start IV’s, perform ECG cardiac monitoring, identify strokes, and many other advanced medical interventions. Early ALS intervention by paramedics is a crucial part of the American Heart Association’s Chain of Survival. It is proven that with early access to ALS protocols, the survival rate of a cardiac arrest patients is increased.

The hard work and dedication of members of the Fire Department, the support received from the Suisun City Council and City Manager, and the vision set forth by the Suisun City Fire Department leadership team has made this designation possible.

“In early 2019, Council began to make a long overdue investment in our Fire Department to ensure the safety of residents in hopes they would experience the same quality of care as neighboring cities,” said Mayor Lori Wilson. “Reaching the milestone of providing ALS is not only demonstrative of this worthwhile endeavor, but also the hard work of the City Manager Greg Folsom, Chief Vincent, and the men and women of the Suisun City Fire Department.”

“We congratulate Suisun City FD on the implementation of their Paramedic program,” said Medic Ambulance President & COO Jim Pierson. “We cherish our long-standing relationship with Suisun City. Medic and Suisun City have continually collaborated to improve our community, by ensuring access to public AED Devices in city facilities and LUCAS automated CPR devices for our caregivers.

“Suisun FD and Medic provide exemplary medical services to Suisun City and Solano County residents and we celebrate with our partners on this historic day,” Pierson said.
