Update: Marina Dredging

Work on the Marina Dredging project continues to move forward in two segments: Pierce Island Levee Rehabilitation and Dredging Project. Following is an update on the timeline for this work based on the latest information received by the City.

Pierce Island Levee Rehabilitation Project (Phase One)

Rehabilitation work on Pierce Island is necessary to prepare the levees to receive dredge material to be removed from the bottom of the Marina.

The scope of work for the Pierce Island Rehabilitation Project includes the installation of Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse (SMHM) exclusion fencing, vegetation removal, SMHM herding and levee construction at the east pond, as well as repairing and modifying existing weirs and discharge pipes on the island.

During the week of August 20, 2018, the contractor will begin staging the required equipment, including crew transportation boat, military landing craft (for the transportation of heavy equipment), and material at the Marina and the Boat Launch parking lot at the south end of Kellogg Street.  A Certified Biologist and Botanist will perform the required pre-construction surveys on the island.

On August 27, 2018, the contractor will begin the Levee Rehabilitation work on Pierce Island.  This work will include “herding” of the Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse, the installation of exclusion fencing, and the removal of vegetation at the East Pond.

On September 20, 2018, the contractor will begin excavation within the East Pond.  Excavated material will be used to build the new levee surrounding the East Pond to prepare Pierce Island for the upcoming dredging spoils material.  This work is scheduled for completion on November 9, 2018.

Preparation for the 2019 Dredging Project will begin in January during which time the required bird survey will take place.  The bird survey is performed during a four-month period and determines the Dredging Project timeline.

The current biological regulation for the 2019 Dredge Project are

  • If no birds are detected, the City can dredge August 1, 2019 through November 30, 2019.
  • If birds are detected, the City can dredge October 1, 2019 through November 30, 2019.

Pierce Island Levee Rehabilitation Project (Phase Two)

The second phase of the Pierce Island Levee Rehabilitation Project will include the installation of exclusion fence and the removal of vegetation at the West Pond.  This work timeline also is contingent on the biological bird study that will take place between January and the end of April 2019, and is estimated to take approximately one month to complete.

  • If no birds are detected, the City can begin Rehabilitation of the West Pond on June 15, 2019.
  • If birds are detected, the City can begin Rehabilitation of the West Pond on September 1, 2019.

Dredging is a vital part of the overall success of Suisun City and it is a priority of the City Council and City staff to ensure our waterway remains accessible to our residents, visitors, and businesses.

We will provide additional updates if there are any changes to the above timeline to ensure all residents receive the updated information.
