ABOUT THE PROJECT

The City of Suisun City Public Works Department, in coordination with the City of Fairfield, is installing significant road improvements, railroad crossing safety enhancements and installing a 36-inch water main along and under Sunset Avenue and a portion of Railroad Avenue.

The $2.8 million project will:

  • widen Sunset Avenue
  • install new coordinated traffic signals at Railroad Avenue East
  • connect traffic signals at Railroad Avenue East and West with East Travis Blvd. to coordinate with the Union Pacific Railroad warning system
  • install new medians on both sides of the railroad crossing
  • create new bike lanes
  • install left turn lanes
  • install sidewalks on both sides of Sunset Avenue
  • enhance street lighting
  • improve storm drainage
  • install new landscaping and signage

Originally, Suisun City planned the safety enhancements and roadway improvements to address pressing concerns about pedestrian safety around the railroad crossing and to improve traffic flow.

Meanwhile, Fairfield was independently planning to install a 36-inch water line that ran under Sunset Avenue just south of the tracks to a culvert under Railroad Avenue West. The Suisun City project was due to be completed first, but the Fairfield work would require major demolition of the new street work to reach the water pipe.

Once the conflict was realized, the two cities partnered to complete both projects more quickly, for less money and without costly redundancies. The result will be a much higher quality streetscape at a lower combined cost for the two cities.

As part of the project, Union Pacific Railroad will install upgraded warning systems and devices at the railroad crossing.
