Economic Recovery Part 2: Keeping Up the Infrastructure
City Makes Tremendous Headway on Street Improvements

SUISUN CITY - A second element of Suisun City’s efforts to stabilize our economy is to use Federal funding toward local infrastructure and energy projects.

“Not only do we achieve the benefits of better streets, road and bikeways,” said City Manager Suzanne Bragdon, “but we create jobs in the process.”

One of the immediate benefits for our residents is that Suisun City had the ‘most improved’ street system of any Bay Area city in 2009, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.

In 2009, Suisun City’s pavement condition index improved by 20 points, a single year improvement that pushed the City’s rating to 68, the highest since 2001. It also moves the overall condition of the City’s 150 lane miles from ‘at risk’ to ‘fair.’

The 20-point improvement was the highest single-year jump of any Bay Area city or county in 2009, earning Suisun City the MTC’s Most Improved Award.

“And it doesn’t even include completion of the Sunset Avenue rehabilitation project or the 2009 street maintenance project,” said Public Works/Building Services Director Dan Kasperson.

The improved score is the result of the City Council’s commitment of significant resources to improve the City’s road conditions over the past four years, and the implementation of a new rubberized asphalt chip seal program to replace the previous slurry seal maintenance process.

Since 2005, the City has put $4.7 million into the annual summer street maintenance program, which includes a partnership with the Solano Irrigation District to coordinate sewer main replacements.

Our success is that we position ourselves to be ready to take advantage of any and all grant opportunities that come our way whether it involves streets, trails or energy.  Our residents and businesses deserve no less!
