Old Crystal Middle School

Revisioning Crystal School Site
Replacing a classic with a modern neighborhood worthy of Suisun City's heritage
Smart Development from the Ground Up
Resources:

For generations, the Crystal School site was were Suisun City’s children went to be educated. From the City’s earliest days until recent years, the site housed a procession of school facilities, most recently Crystal School, which served first elementary school students then those in middle school.

When the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District built the new Crystal Middle School on Whispering Bay Lane and decided the original site was no longer needed to support its mission, the Suisun City Redevelopment Agency (RDA) realized a unique opportunity was at hand.

With the help of Main Street West Partners, we will create a modern extension to one of the City’s most desirable and historic neighborhoods.

Envision homes bristling with today’s amenities and technologies. Architecture that blends with century-old landmark homes. Public spaces that meld seamlessly with the neighborhood, inviting new residents to stroll to a new Main Street experience.

Realizing the dream will take hard work.

Neighborhood Meeting

City Hall

Main Street West Partners will discuss initial plans for new neighborhood on Old Crystal Middle School site.

Removing the Old
Demolition of Old Crystal Middle School

The process of removing the former school structure began in March. Within weeks, former learning spaces were a heap of rubble sorted by commodity onsite then hauled away for recycling and disposal.

Redevelopment staff and Main Street West Partners realized the playground pavement and old concrete foundations buried onsite were a valuable source of necessary and expensive building materials. Recycling that material onsite would keep it out of the local landfill, prevent hundreds of damaging truck trips and reduce disturbance to nearby residents.

Onsite Storage

Rather than haul it off, contractors excavated the unneeded  asphalt and concrete then ground it onsite into construction-grade base material for use under future streets and home sites. Removal would require approximately 704 double-trailer truck trips over City streets with a similar number needed a few months later to haul in supplies as construction gets underway.

Instead, the valuable construction-grade material will be stored on the site where it will be recycled as part of the upcoming construction process. This project is being continuously monitored by RDA and City staff.

The RDA and Main Street West Partners understand and apologize for the inconvenience construction poses for nearby residents.  However, we hope a quality new development on this site will make temporary challenges worthwhile.

New Neighbors

In June, Main Street West Partners expects to submit an initial application for new single-family homes on the former Crystal site. These homes will be designed to blend with the existing architecture of the neighborhood, consistent with a wide array of City design criteria.

Main Street West Partners and the RDA will hold a neighborhood meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at City Hall — 701 Civic Center Blvd. — to review those plans and invite your comments on the future of the Crystal site.
